The result: a portable pool that holds its shape and behaves like a semi-permanent structure — without concrete, without a metal frame, and without planning permission.

How DWF technology works: the internal thread structure

Standard inflatable pools work by trapping air inside a sealed PVC chamber. At 0.07–0.15 bar, the pressure pushes outward uniformly: the walls remain soft and rounded. This geometry limits both rigidity and height — the walls bow under the pressure of the water and the base splays outward.

DWF construction solves this problem differently.

Inside the wall of a DWF pool, thousands of short polyester threads run perpendicularly between the two inner faces of each wall panel. These threads are woven into the fabric at a precise length: the target wall thickness. When the pool is inflated to operating pressure, air pushes the two faces apart, but the threads — locked at their fixed length — prevent any expansion beyond that point. The result is a flat, rigid panel, not an inflated curve.

At 0.7–0.9 bar (the operating pressure of GIGI pools), the walls are rigid enough to support a 1.5 m column of water without significant deformation. A standard inflatable pool at 0.1 bar cannot do this.

Why pressure determines depth. The wall height of an inflatable pool is directly limited by the resistance of the walls to water pressure. At 0.1 bar, the wall is flexible — it can only support a shallow water column before the base begins to splay outward. At 0.7–0.9 bar, the rigid walls maintain their geometry under far greater water loads. This is the mechanical reason why rigid inflatable pools reach 1.5 m while standard inflatables are capped at 80–90 cm.


The DWF material (Dacron Woven Fabric)

DWF stands for Dacron Woven Fabric. It is a composite material:

  • Outer layers: two sheets of PVC-coated woven polyester fabric, typically rated at 1,000 denier or higher for pool applications.
  • Internal weave: thousands of polyester threads connecting both faces, perpendicular to the surface plane.
  • Overall construction: the assembly is thermally welded or high-frequency welded at the seams — not simply glued.

The term "Dacron" is a registered trademark referring to a polyester fibre developed by DuPont, now used generically in the industry to describe this class of high-tenacity polyester. In practice, reputable manufacturers use high-quality polyester whether or not they strictly carry this designation.

DWF is the same family of materials used in competition inflatable paddleboards, high-end kayaks, and industrial or military inflatable structures. The properties that matter for pools:

  • Temperature tolerance: -20 °C to 80 °C, which covers all European summer use and winter storage conditions.
  • UV resistance: significantly superior to standard PVC, particularly with anti-UV outer coatings.
  • Puncture resistance: considerably higher than standard PVC at equivalent thickness. The woven polyester substrate provides tear resistance that smooth PVC does not.
  • Pressure retention: the material maintains pressure over extended periods without significant loss, provided the valves and seams are intact.

The origins of DWF technology

This construction method was not invented for swimming pools. It originated in industrial and military applications — inflatable shelters, pressurised tubing, inflatable aircraft components — where high rigidity at low weight was the primary engineering constraint.

The consumer breakthrough came through watersports. In the late 2000s and early 2010s, paddleboard manufacturers began applying DWF technology to inflatable SUPs (stand-up paddleboards). The goal was to produce a board as rigid as a solid fibreglass one, but capable of deflating and fitting into a backpack. The technology worked: inflatable SUPs at 0.9–1 bar are rigid enough for sport use.

From paddleboards, the construction migrated to inflatable kayaks, then to large-format applications. Pool manufacturers — first in Europe, then in other markets — recognised that the same structural principle that rigidises a 10 cm board at 1 bar could produce a rigid 1.5 m pool wall at 0.7 bar.

The European rigid inflatable pool market is still in a growth phase. It sits between the established mass market (inflatables and steel-framed pools at €200–600) and permanent in-ground or semi-permanent pools (from €10,000–15,000 upwards). The segment is growing as buyers in the €2,000–5,000 range seek products offering genuine swim depth without the cost and permanence of in-ground pools.

The fundamental difference lies in the wall. In a standard inflatable pool, air pushes uniformly in all directions — the wall bows outward because nothing prevents it. In a DWF rigid inflatable pool, the internal threads impose a fixed geometry. The pool inflates to its intended shape and holds it.


Rigid inflatable pool vs steel-framed pool: what changes

Steel-framed and rigid inflatable pools can reach comparable depths. The comparison between these two categories is less about depth than about construction philosophy.

A steel-framed pool is rigid because of its chassis. The liner is passive — it holds the water, but the steel carries the load. The chassis must be assembled piece by piece, does not pack down compactly, is susceptible to corrosion at assembly points, and cannot be moved without complete dismantling.

A rigid inflatable pool is rigid because of air pressure and thread geometry. The structure goes from its packed format to a functional pool in approximately one hour, deflates in 30 minutes, and packs down compactly. No corrosion. No frame sections to lose or damage.


What to check before buying

Wall depth. This is the primary specification. GIGI pools are available in 1.2 m and 1.5 m — check which depth matches your main use case.

Operating pressure and material classification. A rigid inflatable pool certified for 0.7–0.9 bar is structurally sound. Be cautious of models that do not publish their pressure ranges — this generally means the material is not engineered for this level of performance.

What is included. Rigid inflatable pools at €2,000 or more are often sold without a filter or pump.
