How to install a rigid inflatable pool: complete step-by-step guide

Installing a rigid inflatable pool is different from assembling a steel-framed pool. There is no frame to put together, no bolts to tighten, no liner to hook into place. The entire physical setup — ground preparation, inflation to operating pressure, connecting the sand filter — takes approximately one hour with two people.

The water-filling phase (running a garden hose) is passive and takes 8 to 42 hours depending on the model. You start filling and come back. This guide covers installation in the order you will carry it out.


Before you begin

What the GIGI pack contains. Your order includes: the pool, a 330 W sand filter, an electric inflation/deflation pump, a repair kit (patches and adhesive), and a ground protection mat. What you need to provide:

  • A garden hose (50 m recommended to reach the pool without tension)
  • An adaptor if your outdoor tap has a non-standard fitting
  • A spirit level (or a smartphone app)
  • Start-up chemicals (pH adjuster, chlorine tablets, test strips)

How long does the complete installation take?

  • Physical setup (steps 1 to 5): approximately 1 hour with two people

Plan to start filling the evening before your first swim.

How many people? Two is recommended. One person can carry out all steps, but unfolding and positioning a pool measuring 4 to 6 metres is significantly easier with two.


Step 1 — Choosing and preparing the location

Leave a minimum of 60 cm clearance around the pool — you need to walk around it for maintenance and to connect the filter.

Ground requirements:

  • Any firm, flat surface: grass, compacted earth, concrete, or paving
  • Ground must be level to within approximately 2 cm across the full width of the pool
  • Avoid loose gravel, soft sand, or thick layers of bark chippings — these surfaces shift under the load

Checking for level: Place your spirit level across the centre of the intended area in two perpendicular directions. A variation of 2 cm or less across the pool diameter is acceptable. Beyond that, fill or compact low areas before proceeding. A pool installed on an uneven surface places unequal stress on the walls and creates an uneven waterline.

Ground preparation:

  1. Walk the area and remove any stones, sticks, roots, or sharp objects
  2. Mow the grass short if it is long — grass growing underneath the pool can puncture the base over time
  3. Lay the included ground protection mat over the cleared area
  4. Optional: place foam floor tiles or interlocking puzzle mats under the protection mat for better cushioning and ground insulation

Note: Avoid placing the pool on dark surfaces or tarmac exposed to full sun without sufficient thermal protection. Dark surfaces can reach temperatures that degrade DWF material over time.


Step 2 — Unfolding the pool

With the ground mat in place, carry the pool bag to the centre of your prepared area.

  1. Remove the pool from the bag
  2. Place it flat at the centre of the mat, valve side up
  3. Unfold progressively — the pool is folded in panels and rolled. Open the panels outward from the centre, spreading it out to its full diameter
  4. Orient the filter connections (inlet and return) towards your preferred access point (generally the side closest to your power socket)
  5. Check that the pool is roughly centred on the mat, with all edges resting on the mat

Tip: In warm weather, leave the pool in the sun for 10 to 15 minutes before inflating. Slightly warmed DWF material is more pliable and inflates more evenly. Do not inflate in temperatures below 5 °C.


Step 3 — Inflate to 0.7–0.9 bar

Connecting the pump:

  1. Locate the main inflation valve on the pool (a large valve, usually on the top of a wall panel)
  2. Connect the hose of the included electric pump to this valve — the fitting is push-and-lock type
  3. Plug the pump into a standard 230 V socket
  4. Set the pump to inflation mode and switch it on

What happens during inflation:

The pool begins to take shape within a few minutes. The walls rise and the pool expands to its full diameter. Wall rigidity increases progressively.

Target pressure: 0.7–0.9 bar on the gauge integrated into the pump or on a separate gauge at the valve. The pool is firm and ready to fill within this range.

Maximum pressure is 1 bar — never exceed this. Exceeding the maximum pressure voids the warranty and risks seam failure.

Estimated inflation times:

  • Round 3 m: 10–15 minutes
  • Round 4 m: 20–25 minutes
  • Round 5 m: 25–35 minutes
  • Round 6 m: 35–45 minutes

Once inflation is complete:

  1. Close the valve and disconnect the pump hose
  2. Walk around the pool and press on the walls at several points — they should be firm with little flex, comparable to a well-inflated bicycle tyre
  3. Check that the base lies flat on the mat without any bulges or gaps underneath

Important: If a section of wall feels noticeably softer than the others, check the valve seal. If the pressure equalises throughout the pool after closing the valve and the problem persists, locate and mark the area and use the repair kit. Do not fill with water if the pool holds significantly below 0.7 bar.


Step 4 — Connecting the 330 W sand filter

The 330 W sand filter is supplied pre-loaded with filter sand (check the documentation included with your delivery — some configurations supply the sand separately). Position it outside the pool near the filter connections.

Connection steps:

  1. Locate the two filter connections on the pool wall (inlet and return, usually labelled)
  2. Connect the included hoses: one from the pump outlet to the pool return connection, the other from the pool suction connection to the pump inlet
  3. Ensure all fittings are hand-tight — use thread seal tape on threaded fittings if your configuration requires it
  4. Position the filter on a flat surface, in the shade if possible — prolonged direct sun on the filter body reduces its lifespan
  5. Plug the filter into a 230 V socket but do not switch it on — wait until there is water in the pool

Note on filter orientation: The 330 W sand filter has a multiport valve with FILTER and BACKWASH positions. Confirm the valve is on FILTER before the first start. The BACKWASH position is only used during maintenance — it reverses the flow to clean the sand bed. Running on BACKWASH without a waste hose connected would discharge sand from the filter.


Step 5 — Pre-fill checklist

Before starting to fill, take five minutes for this checklist:

  • Pool inflated to 0.7–0.9 bar
  • All walls firm and vertical with no soft spots
  • Pool base lying flat on the mat with no bulges
  • Ground mat extending at least 30 cm beyond the pool perimeter on all sides
  • Sand filter positioned and hoses connected
  • Filter valve in the FILTER position
  • All inflation valves closed
  • Power sockets identified for pump and filter (separate circuits recommended for larger models)

Step 6 — Filling with water

Connect your garden hose to the outdoor tap and place the other end at the centre of the pool.

Fill to 90% of wall height. For a 1.5 m wall pool: fill to approximately 1.35 m. Leave 15 cm of freeboard — the space between the water surface and the pool rim. This margin prevents overflow when swimmers move in the water.

Tip: If your water pressure is below average (common in some rural areas), filling will take longer than the estimates. A hose flow rate of 8 to 10 litres per minute would add 5 to 10 hours to the estimates.

Once the water reaches approximately 30 cm: switch on the sand filter. Running it during filling starts water circulation and avoids stagnant areas on the floor.

During filling:

  • Check the inflation pressure every 8 to 10 hours — the walls may need slight re-inflation as the DWF material settles slightly under the water load during the first fill. Maintain 0.7–0.9 bar.
  • Watch the pool base — if one side appears to have more water than the other (visible tilt in the waterline), the ground may be less level than initially assessed. If the difference exceeds 5 cm at the water surface, drain, recheck the level, and start again.

Step 7 — First chemical treatment

Do not leave a freshly filled pool with untreated tap water standing. Treat within 4 to 6 hours of completing the fill.

First treatment sequence:

  1. Test your fill water with a standard pool test kit — identify your starting pH and alkalinity before adding anything
  2. Adjust pH first if needed (lower with hydrochloric acid or sodium bisulphate; raise with sodium carbonate)
  3. Adjust alkalinity if needed (sodium bicarbonate to raise, hydrochloric acid to lower)
  4. Add a shock treatment (calcium hypochlorite or sodium dichloroisocyanurate) to raise free chlorine to 3–5 mg/L for the initial treatment
  5. Run the sand filter for at least 8 hours after treatment before retesting
  6. Retest and adjust to target values — the pool is ready for swimming

Note on dosing: Always dose based on the exact volume of your pool. A GIGI 4 m round pool at 1.5 m contains approximately 14,000 litres. Dosage instructions on packaging are often per 10,000 litres — adjust accordingly. Under-dosing a 14,000-litre pool as if it were a 4,000-litre pool leaves the water without sufficient disinfection.


Common mistakes to avoid

Skipping the level check. A pool installed on a 4–5 cm slope looks fine when empty — and becomes visible and potentially dangerous once full, with the base lifting on the lower side. Three minutes with a spirit level prevents this.

Over-inflating. The 1 bar maximum pressure is a firm limit. Some users think "more inflation = more rigidity" and exceed 0.9 bar. Above 1 bar, seam stress increases sharply. The pool may not fail immediately, but repeated inflation above maximum pressure progressively damages the seams and voids the warranty.

Filling before the location is ready. A full 4 m round pool weighs approximately 14 tonnes. Moving it requires complete draining. Prepare the ground properly before filling.

Running the filter dry. The pump impeller operates on water — running it without water in the pool can damage the motor within minutes. Never switch the filter on before there is at least 30 cm of water in the pool.

Forgetting the first chemical treatment. Tap water at 30 °C in full sun can develop algae in 24 to 48 hours. Treat the water within the first few hours after completing the fill.

Using an incorrect ladder. A standard pool ladder is designed for a 90 cm wall height. On a 1.5 m wall pool, a standard ladder is too short — the top step sits below the pool rim, creating a problem getting in and out. Use a ladder specifically designed for 1.5 m wall height.

Below 0.7 bar, the walls are noticeably flexible and water pressure may cause them to bow outward.

Do I need to put something under the pool? Yes — use at minimum the included ground protection mat. It protects the pool base from punctures by stones, sticks, or rough surfaces. For better cushioning and ground insulation, foam floor tiles can be placed under the protection mat. The key requirement is a flat, firm surface.

Can one person install a GIGI pool alone? Yes, but two people make it significantly easier. The steps that benefit most from two pairs of hands: unfolding the pool (which measures 4 to 6 m when spread out), positioning it precisely before inflation, and holding the pump hose during the initial inflation phase. All mechanical steps — inflation, filter connection, valve operation — can be carried out alone.

How long does it take to fill a 4 m round pool at 1.5 m? With a standard garden hose at approximately 12–15 litres per minute, the GIGI 4 m round pool at 1.5 m takes 14 to 19 hours to reach the recommended 90% fill level (approximately 1.35 m of water, around 14,000 litres). A higher flow rate reduces this time proportionally.
